How co-regulation works
The nervous system unconsciously picks up signals from the other person: breathing, voice, facial expressions, micro-movements. If you, as a therapist, are truly regulated (not feigning calm, but genuinely in your ventral vagus), the client's nervous system receives that information and can move with it. That's not a technique, that's presence.
In practice
In a session with an anxious client, co-regulation starts with yourself: feeling your feet, breathing, keeping your gaze soft. Don't speak faster to reassure the client, but slower. Don't rescue, but be present. Often, the panic subsides within minutes, without you having done anything technical.
Common mistake
The mistake is thinking that co-regulation is only something the therapist does for the client. In reality, it goes both ways. If you enter the session dysregulated (your own stress, too little break, no lunch), the client unconsciously co-regulates you into your dysregulation. Therefore, self-regulation is not a luxury but a professional foundation.

Veelgestelde vragen
Can I apply co-regulation online via video calls?
Yes, but less powerfully than in the same physical space. Breathing and voice come through, but subtle body signals much less. Plan more explicit regulation moments for online sessions.
What if I am not regulated myself during a session?
Acknowledge it within yourself, take a breath, and be honest, 'I notice I need to ground myself for a moment. Please give me a moment.' That's not failure, that's modeling what you teach.
How does co-regulation differ from empathy?
Empathy is understanding what the other person feels. Co-regulation is when your nervous system provides a safe anchor from which the other's nervous system can reorganize itself. Empathy without regulation can even be overwhelming.
