Why Belgium Deserves Its Own Manual
Many Dutch marketing tips for therapists don't translate directly to Flanders or Brussels. The law on mental health professions (2014, revised 2016) protects the title of clinical psychologist and clinical orthopedagogue. Anyone without that recognition is not allowed to offer psychotherapy as a main activity without working under the supervision of a recognized practitioner. This changes how you structure your website text: what terms you use, what field of work you claim, and which referrals you can safely attract.
At the same time, there is room. Somatic work, body-oriented guidance, coaching with somatic techniques, and counseling are not legally regulated. The freedom is great, as is the responsibility for clear positioning.
The Six Themes Every Belgian Therapist Must Know
- RIZIV convention: reimbursed sessions via referral centers (only for recognized clinical psychologists).
- Mutuality: supplementary insurance often reimburses 8 to 12 sessions per year, even for non-recognized therapists with appropriate training.
- Professional associations: BVRGS, VVPT, BFP, ABP, and specific somatic registers provide a quality guarantee to clients and the mutuality.
- Clinical psychologist recognition: determines which title you may use and what actions you may perform.
- Administrative start-up: KBO (Crossroads Bank for Enterprises) registration, self-employed social status, VAT exemption article 44.
- Training courses: recognized routes in Somatic Experiencing, NARM, and Sensorimotor that can be followed in Belgium or from the Netherlands.
How This Manual Connects
The six individual articles together form a single roadmap. Start with the recognition question (may I call myself a clinical psychologist?), then choose your positioning framework (which titles and terms are available to me?), and subsequently build your financial picture around mutuality and potential RIZIV access. The administrative checklist and the training overview are the practical cornerstones.

Veelgestelde vragen
Is this manual also useful for Wallonia?
The legal frameworks (FOD (Federal Public Service) Public Health, RIZIV) apply federally and thus also in Wallonia and Brussels. Professional associations differ linguistically: French-speaking ones include SSMG, ABP, and their French-speaking counterparts. The substantive logic remains the same.
Does this also apply to Dutch therapists working in Belgium?
Yes. If you practice in Belgium, Belgian rules regarding title protection and VAT exemption apply, regardless of your place of residence. A Dutch NVPA membership does not grant recognition as a clinical psychologist in Belgium.
What is the biggest mistake made by starting therapists in Belgium?
Putting the term psychotherapist or psychologist on their website without recognition. In Belgium, this is punishable under the mental healthcare professions law. Always start with the recognition question before writing texts.
How often is this manual updated?
Twice a year, and immediately upon changes in the RIZIV convention or recognition rules. Version and date are at the bottom of each article.
